Fripp Island Getaway

October 16, 2017 Randi Leave a Comment

Last week, we spent four relaxing days on Fripp Island, SC soaking up the sun and salt air.  Come visit this beautiful beach town with me!

Over the last several years, I've had the chance to explore most of South Carolina's beautiful shoreline.  From Myrtle Beach to Hilton Head, the Palmetto State boasts some lovely seaside escapes.  My current favorite?  Fripp Island!  J and I, along with my parents, recently packed up and headed down to this private resort community.  Oh, and Mister Leo came too.  Ever seen a cat hanging out on the beach?  Keep reading.

Fripp Island is a barrier island located between Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA.   It’s only about six square miles, so once through the gate, most folks park their cars and drive around in golf carts.  The landscape is simply stunning.  On one side of the island you have the Atlantic Ocean (with some of the widest beaches I've ever witnessed) and on the other side is the salt marsh.  It’s scenery has even been the backdrop for a few movies.  Remember the Vietnam War scenes from Forrest Gump?  They were filmed right here on Fripp Island.

Even though Fripp is a private resort, it never feels stuffy or pretentious.  Everyone is so laid-back and friendly!  The island is definitely the perfect place to escape reality for a few days.  There are no hotels or chain stores.  Just houses, condos, and a few resort run restaurants and shops.  Beaufort, the closest large town, is about 18 miles away.  After our grocery run the day of arrival, we never set foot off the island for rest of the trip.

Our condo (rented through VRBO) was located mid island right across from the Beach Club.  We spent our days lounging poolside, walking along deserted beaches, and exploring the island on foot and via golf cart!

One of the most unique things do on Fripp is visit with the island’s many non-human residents.  I’m talking about the deer.  Fripp is home to a ton of wild deer.   They are everywhere, and most of them will walk right up to you.

They’ll even eat out of your hand!  Now, that's something you don't get to experience every day.

If you want a more active vacation, then Fripp’s got you covered.  There are two gorgeous golf courses, a tennis complex, and seven sparkling swimming pools.  There’s also an activity center that hosts arts and crafts, bird watching, kayaking tours, and a slew of summertime kid activities.  Down at the marina, you can rent boats, paddle boards, bicycles, and golf carts.

Visiting Fripp Island in the off season, we felt like we almost had the place to ourselves.  We never counted more than 15 people on the beach at one time.  Fripp is definitely a tranquil paradise for beach and nature lovers alike.

Oh, and Mister Leo?  He very much enjoyed his vacation.  Our condo had a screened-in porch overlooking the tidal creek, which pretty much equates to cat heaven.

We took him for a walk and let him feel the sand beneath his paws.

And the curious cat even made friends with a curious deer.  (At least for a second, until the deer ran away!)

Overall, we had a fantastic time on Fripp Island.  It's such a special place and definitely where to go to truly unwind and get away from it all.  I can't wait to visit again soon!
